Qualified praise has been heaped on the Pension Commission's report by government ministers, opposition spokespeople and industry associations.
Alan Johnson, secretary of state for Work and Pensions, says the work into data collection and statistical analysis is welcomed and accepted. He adds, however, the report reveals "stark challenges" facing government in providing for increasingly long retirements, while also pointing out that people must either save more or work longer. Recognisiont is also due to the findings contributions and pension scheme membership seem to have fallen in the past 20 years, "unnoticed due to stock market exuberance".
