The Conservative Party has pledged to re-establish the basic state pension earnings link, reduce the role of means-tested benefits, and scrap compulsory annuity purchase for 75-year-olds under a new Conservative Government.
Michael Howard took a swipe at Labour this morning for its treatment of the aged by suggesting people deserved to be treated with ‘dignity and respect’, with not being the case today. He instead said the elderly were not part of Blair’s plans for a ‘New Britain’ adding: “New Labour's Britain is a young country, a country where the older generation is airbrushed out.” He continued: “Many pensioners have become prisoners in their own homes - too frightened of yobs and muggers to go out even during the day.
