Yvette Cooper has become Secretary of State for the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) as part of the Prime Minister's Cabinet reshuffle.
Downing Street has also confirmed Lord Mandelson will remain as Business Minister while Alistair Darling will continue as Chancellor. Cooper was previously Treasury Secretary, and has considerable experience in economic matters, having being an economic researcher for John Smith and economics columnist for The Independent newspaper. She has spoken at numerous financial services industry events in her role as Treasury Secretary, and also took responsibility for welfare reform, public sector pay and procurement policy.
