NRock shareholders lose latest court battle

Northern Rock shareholders have lost their latest appeal against the Government's decision not to compensate them.

The appeal against the High Court's decision not to hold a judicial review of the Government's handling of the nationalised bank was rejected. When the Government took over Northern Rock in early 2008, shareholders were told they would not receive any compensation because the bank would not have survived without state intervention. The long legal challenge has gone in the Government's favour so far, but campaigners say they will not take the case to the House of Lords. High Court judges ruled shareholder had taken a commercial risk when they invested in Northern Rock.
