Dates set for TV election debates

Dates for a series of televised debates, featuring the leaders of all three major political parties, have been confirmed.

The debates will focus on the three key themes of public services, international affairs and the economy. In a first for UK politics, Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg will pit their wits against each other in front of a live audience. Televised debates have been a major feature of US election campaigns since 1960, but it has taken 50 years for British leaders to agree to such events in the UK.
