Care home providers are failing to inform local councils when residents die and continue to receive money for their care, new research reveals.
According to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests lodged with 20 councils by the Times, 14 councils have overpaid care home providers in the past year because they were not informed residents had died. These councils included Southwark, Birmingham, Durham and Knowsley and Merseyside. Durham County Council paid out £105.998 for the care of 79 residents who had died because the authority was either not properly informed of the deaths, or it failed to properly update records.
