Women hit harder by poor joint pension planning - Pru

Women are more likely than men to be hit by financial hardship when they retire if their spouse dies before them, according to Prudential.

The group's research has revealed 54% of couples aged over 40 do not make joint retirement arrangements to ensure their partner will have an income in the event of their death. A quarter (26%) of couples have never discussed what will happen to their pensions if one partner dies before the other, the study on 2,002 couples aged over 40 found. The research added 7% of people will be completely dependent on their spouse's income in retirement. It showed women are twice as likely as men to live off their partner, with 10% planning to depend on their other half, compared with 5% of men...
