Winter fuel benefit should be means tested to meet the long-term care ‘time bomb', according to a Liberal Democrat MP.
In a report by The Centre Forum, former care services minister Paul Burstow claimed £500 million could be saved every year if the money was re-routed to long-term care and used alongside a cap of £50,000-£60,000. The think tank argues universal pensioner benefits such as Winter Fuel Payment, targets many who do not need assistance and should be reformed to help those in real need.
