Increase in pensioner numbers outpaces population growth

The UK population above retirement age has grown faster than any other cohort over the last decade, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals.

The number of over-65s in the UK hit 10.4 million according to the 2011 censes, which is 16% of the overall population of 63.2 million. The over-65 population increased from 9.4 million to 10.4 million from 2001 to 2011, a growth rate of 11%. This outstrips the average UK growth of 7% and the 8% for those aged 16-64.
