Higher rate pension tax relief has been described as being in "its final days" and of "minimal value from a social perspective" by one adviser.
Bradbury Hamilton managing director Sheriar Bradbury called for the introduction of a flat rate of tax which would be set at a higher level than basic rate tax. "From a social perspective higher rate tax relief is of minimal value and the money saved could be used to help the people who need it most - for instance those retiring on benefits," he said. "Of course from a commercial point of view we wouldn't want to see higher rate tax relief go but is it really justified - I feel it could be in its final days."
