Opt-out rates averaged around 9% in the first six months of auto-enrolment (AE), the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed.
Unofficial estimates from the earliest months of the project suggested rates of less than 10%, with companies such as McDonalds and Whitbread reporting opt-out rates of around 3%. The DWP analysed data from 50 employers with staging dates between October 2012 and April 2013 and with workforces of 6,000 to 120,000. Of the 50 organisations, 13 were public sector bodies. There was an average 9% opt-out rate across both public and private sector employers in the study. Opt-out rates among most individual employers were between 5% and 15% of those auto-enrolled.
