Citizen's Advice Bureau warns of 'debt help' scam

Advisers have been warned to look out for unusual phone calls to clients after Citizen's Advice Bureaux (CAB) across the country said imposters were offering fake "debt help" sessions to vulnerable people.

The callers ask for bank details, after pretending to offer a session with an adviser to help with debt problems. Brent CAB director Jacqueline Carr called the scam "despicable". "We were horrified when someone who wasn't an existing client contacted a local bureau to find out how they knew they were in debt and told them they had had a call from one of their advisers," she said. Carlisle branch manager Andy Auld told the News and Star that his branch made it "very clear" that no CAB adviser would ever phone or text to offer debt management.
